Linux Interview Tips

linux_robotLinux (often pronounced LIH-nuhks with a short “i”) is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to offer personal computer users a free or very low cost operating system equivalent to conventional and usually classier Unix systems. Linux has a reputation as a very efficient and fast performing system. System administrators, programmers and operators work with Linux operating system to handle database management and software design. If you are looking for a job to work with Linux, prepare your interviewing strategies ahead of time so you can perform your best at job interview. This will increase your probabilities of working with Linux operating system in a tech-friendly company. Here are some instructions by following them you can perform well during interview.

Study Before Interview

You should read Linux textbooks to prepare for any technical questions, you might be asked during job interview. Although you will get knowledge from job experience, it helps to study ahead of time to remember glossary terms and operating system examples. You must read study books like “A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors and Shell Programming” by Mark G. Sobell or “Understanding the Linux Kernel” by Daniel P. Bovet.

Practice Interview Questions

You should practice sample Linux interview questions, this will help you in interview preparation. You can ask well-informed friend who have reasonable information about Linux, to question you about aspects of operating system, including inode data structures, cryptographic systems and secure socket layers (SSL). You can look for sample questions online that an interviewer can ask during an interview.

Dress Well

You should come in your best work appropriate outfits for interview. Although various companies allow employees in tech positions like Linux operators, to dress casually but this is not in case of every company. You should wear clean, pressed dress slacks and a dress jacket with a collared shirt. Women can wear a muted blouse and dress slacks or a dress skirt with a hem at or below knee.

Wait Before Answering

You should listen questions properly, don’t be hurry in answering let the hiring executive to finish his/her question before you start to answer. Even if you know all technical terms of Linux data but wait interviewer gets to end of question. It will be rude to cut his/her off so you should wait for three seconds after he/she completes her question to answer. This will provide you time to formulate an appropriate answer.

Keep Answers Concise

Keep your answers during interview concise and to the point especially with technical questions. Your answers should be last between one and three minutes. If you want to use examples in your answer, limit them to one or two brief anecdotes.

Relate Everything to Experience

Hiring authorities are looking for employees who fit with personality of company, they are most interested in finding someone qualified for job. You should show your qualifications by relating them with every question to your experience. If an interviewer asks you an ostensibly personal question like “What do you like to do with your free time?” you can answer, “I like to study new Linux structures and program Linux-based games during my spare time”.
