A nanny is a person who looks after child or children of another family. Some persons also know nanny as childminder but they differ from each other because nanny goes to house of child in order to care for it and childminders look after child in childminder’s home. Modern nannies can live in or out like other domestic workers, depending on their circumstances and those of their employers. Traditional nanny was a servant in large household and reported directly to lady of house. Hiring a person as nanny to care for small children is a decision that must be taken seriously. Having a nanny can be a wonderful thing but allowing for this person is responsible for complete care and safety of your child in your absence. There are various factors which should be considered before delegating them job.

Just like other job applicants, nannies interview with prospective clients is also essential. Parents should be ready to conduct their interviews thoroughly and carefully to make best possible decision.

Identity

Before hiring a person as nanny make sure that you know whom you are dealing with is tremendously important. All applicants for a nanny position should present a government-issued identification. You should gave copied these documents for your files. Identity checking authenticates nanny’s legal rights to work in this country and makes a background check more reachable. Any prospective nanny, you have not known in your entire life should endure a thorough background check before you leave them alone with your child.

References

A nanny should provide previous work experience during interview, including references for previous employers. You should meet this person if possible. You should gather personal references and check them thoroughly if it is her first assignment.

Public Place for Initial Interview

You should have first interview with prospective nanny in a public place. You can choose somewhere comfortable like a fast food restaurant with a kid’s playground. This person is a stranger and since you don’t yet know this person, this act keeps strangers out of your house and protects your family. The nanny candidate will also appreciate this because she is also protected as well.

Working Interview

After preliminary interview if you are satisfied with nanny’s information and your family also feels comfortable with this person then ask her to come to your home for a working interview. You should scheduled interview when you are at home with your child. You must offer to pay nanny for her time during this interview. You can allow applicant to spend a day caring for child as she would during a normal day of work. You should stay out of sight for most of time but observe her actions keenly. Meet afterward to talk about what you approved or disapproved of throughout day.

Emergencies

You should be sure that nanny is familiar with emergency procedures. You can ask about choking hazards related to small food or what to do in emergency situations. Ask if she is CPR certified. If her reply is positive then ask to see documentation.

Philosophy About Children Growth

Once the particulars are out of way ask her about her philosophy on growing children. See how she really feels about children. Find out her view of discipline. Ask about her childhood was like; how she feels about way she was grown up. These stories will provide insight into how nanny thinks. This will also help you to decide whether to offer her job.
